Iran requested that FIFA “completely suspend” the Israeli federation “from all activities related to football” in a statement that was made available on the Iranian football organization’s website.

Along with “immediate and serious measures” to “prevent the continuation” of Israeli “crimes and provide food, drinking water, medicinal and medical supplies to innocent people and civilians,” the letter also calls on FIFA and its member organizations.

On October 7, Hamas terrorists launched an unprecedented onslaught against Israel, sparking the start of the Gaza War. Approximately 1,160 people died as a consequence of it, the majority of them civilians, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli numbers.

Israel retaliated by vowing to destroy Hamas. At least 27,947 people have died as a result of its airstrikes and ground assault, the majority of them were women and children, according to the Gaza Strip’s health ministry, which is controlled by Hamas.

Although Iran has denied any direct participation, it has praised Hamas’s October 7 strike as a “success.”

The Islamic Republic forbids any communication between Iranian and Israeli athletes and does not recognize Israel as its sworn enemy.

Weightlifter Mostafa Rajaei received a lifelong ban from the Iranian government in August of last year after shaking hands with an Israeli competitor at an event in Poland, according to state media at the time.

Hamid Salehinia, the leader of the Iranian Weightlifting Federation’s delegation, was also fired.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the top leader of Iran, advised athletes in 2021 “not to shake hands with a representative of the (Israeli) criminal regime in order to obtain a medal.”

According to a story published by Sky News on Thursday, a number of Middle Eastern football organizations, including those from Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, have also “asked world football chiefs to ban Israel over the war on Hamas in Gaza.”
