Two Bouncers Per Over: Major Mushtaq Ali Trophy Rule Change Announced by BCCI; IPL Next?

In addition to announcing a number of rule amendments for its domestic T20 event, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the BCCI convened its 19th Apex Council meeting on Friday in Mumbai.

The board has opted to permit two bouncers each over in order to improve the balance between batsmen and bowlers in the T20 format.

One bouncer is allowed at a time for the time being, as is the format regulation.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-63050″ src=”” alt=”” width=”1524″ height=”857″ srcset=” 640w,×220.png 390w,×84.png 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1524px) 100vw, 1524px” />

“The BCCI has decided to introduce two bouncers per over in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy to balance the contest between bat and ball,” the organization said in a media statement on Saturday.

The two bouncers per over regulation may be introduced in the franchise competition, same to how the Impact Player regulation was effectively applied in SMAT before being adopted by the Indian Premier League.

The Impact Player rule, which BCCI initially implemented in SMAT 2022, has since been modified.

The updated version, which was utilized for IPL 2023, will now also be used in the next iteration of SMAT.

Before the toss, the sides must choose their starting lineup and four replacement players, according to BCCI.

Only until the 14th over of an innings may a side deploy the Impact Player in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy’s first season. The compulsion has been eliminated, however.

The statement noted that “the teams may use the Impact Player at any time during the match.”

In two stages, the BCCI will upgrade stadiums.

The first phase, which will concern the locations where matches will be played during the 2023 ICC Men’s World Cup, is anticipated to be finished in time for the major tournament, which is scheduled to take place in October and November.

In the second phase, the remaining venues will get upgrades.

The men’s and women’s cricket teams will be sent to the Asian Games in 2023 with authorisation from the BCCI.

According to Jay Shah, secretary of the BCCI, “considering the overlap of schedule between the Asian Games and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, BCCI will choose from the players not competing in the World Cup to play in the Asian Games.”
